Dj Qbert Comes to Town 13th September

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Scratch Club present Dj Qbert, 13th September, Rainbow Warehouse

DJ Qbert is a legend amongst the scratch fraternity, and hardly suprising since he is a 4x world DMC champion. He is a member of the DJ hall of fame and an ex-member of the invisibl skratch picklz, alongside Mixmaster Mike of the Beastie Boys.

The last time we saw Dj Qbert in Birmingham was back in 2005 at the Medicine Bar (we have the pics to prove it, see below!), so its about time we saw a return and this time to the all new Rainbow Warehouse.

Dj Qbert is only making two UK appearances this year, with the other being at the mighty Fabric in London, so Birmingham should be feeling mighty proud and lucky to be playing host.

You can go view the event here on woib and buy tickets

Support acts on the night include:

Automaton (satamile records)
Dj Switch (3x UK DMC Champion - see here for my review and photos)
mc xander (live shamanic beatbox explorer)
the mc mash clan (braindrop, london)

This really is going to be a fantastic night of world class scratching ad general turntable madness (did I mention Qbert uses his own unique design of turntable?) - and with these sort of world class perfomances few and far bwteen, we suggest you bag yourself a ticket quick, as we reckon this ones gonna be kicking off with people hanging from the rafters.

Project X Presents: Digital Dystopia

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Project X Presents, the Birmingham based creative network will present their fourth and latest event in a brand new location in central Birmingham on Sept 13 2008.

The Digital Dystopia performance will further develop and explore the group’s remarkable “Omnimedia Experience” format - in which audiences enter a strange and custom designed wonderland of sound, light and interaction for an unforgettable evening of enchantment.

The main body of the event takes place in one special room - in which the audience is surrounded by three stages housing a seamless procession of music and spoken word - all carefully sequenced by the group and woven into a continual mix of sound.  The musical effect becomes greater than the sum of each special part as each contributes to the whole, like a unique opera show written in collaboration by the collective mind of a variety of talented performers.

Visual screens will envelop the room, manned by a team comprising some of the most talented visual artists and VJs in the region, each producing work specific to the event and the music.

A separate room offers a change of pace and the chance for the audience to engage further with the event, interacting with giant toy-like installations offering a fun, different and tactile experience.

Dancers and physical theatre performers will lead the audience on a journey of discovery to confront the possibilities of a dystopian future:

Are ID cards, ubiquitous CCTV surveillance and mass addiction to television and the Internet all omens of a future society controlled by fear and strangled by bureaucracy?

Project X Presents is an independent network of creative individuals, artist lead and dedicated to the development of creativity and expression. have an abundance of experience between them, not least the delivery of three previous event, at the Epic Skate Park, Rainbow Warehouse and Concrete.

Project X Presents events are engaging and entertaining. The unique collaborations between performers, artists, technicians and musicians they entail result in a joyous sense of occasion and celebratory atmosphere - one of the many attractions of the shows.

You can’t bottle it - but you can be part of it!

In keeping with our previous work, this project will birth an entirely new venue on the Birmingham scene - more details to follow very soon!

Ideal Skateshop has found a new home at the custard factory, complete with its own mini ramp!

Ideal is open 10.30 am - 6.00 pm Monday through to Saturday and 12 Noon - 4.00 pm Sundays. But as they say on their website: “these times are not rules. just guidance. Please don’t grumble if we are a little late. we’re not the bank of England, we are a skateboard shop…Thanks”

Jibbering “Some Like it Hot” Summer Sale

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Jibbering records has got something of a unique sale on at the moment.

The hotter the weather is, the more you get off your music!

Whatever the temperature is [in celcius!] on the thermometer at the point of sale, is the % discount you get off your music - 25 degrees celcius would equate to a discount of 25%, and if we have a freak heatwave of 100 degrees they’ll be giving away free (albeit probably slightly melted) music!

Jibbering is located at 136 Alcester Road, Moseley - and specialises in Funk, Hip Hop, Reggae, Dub Step and Global Grooves.

The sale will run until the end of August!

A Taste of Birmingham

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

We went along to the launch at Brindley Place, where top chefs Surachet Patpun, Aktar Islam and Chris Duffy from Thai Edge, Lasan, and Falini cooked up a storm on a BBQ in front of Thai Edge. Each prepared a dish, whilst explaining to the gathered crowds not only the ingredients and recipe, but also the reasons behind their choice and combinations. It was all very much in the style of any good television cookery programme.

Celebrity chef Atul Kochhar was present to have a taste and judge between the three prepared dishes - although when it came down to making a decision as to a winner he was diplomatically vague, saying that they were all fantastic.

I was a personal fan of Chris Duffy’s Sea Bass, not least because there was a decent amount of it to go round for tasting - though be wary of bones, as they are sharp enough to pierce your lip.

Now in its third consecutive year, Taste of Birmingham will celebrate the very best cuisine the Midlands’ offers in the beautiful surroundings of Cannon Hill Park, from Thursday 10th July to Sunday 13th July 2008. Get down there and get involved with food.

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

As the sun continues to beat down across the region, Birmingham’s leading chefs and restaurateurs have revealed what they love most about summer, and the delicious seasonal dishes they have in store for visitors to this year’s Taste of Birmingham.

Chef David Cocombe from Opus said:
“Everybody looks forward to summer. For me, it’s all about enjoying quality seasonal produce and the occasional long lazy brunch. With any luck, we might even be in for some good English strawberries this year.”

Restaurateur, Raj Rana, from Itihaas, added:
“Customers are noticeably happier when the sun starts to shine! For us, summer can be a really hectic time as we cater for up to 3,000 wedding guests every weekend, but I always look forward to picnics, barbeques and eating outside.”

Andreas Antona, Chef Patron at the Michelin-starred Simpsons said:
“In England we are lucky to enjoy four distinct seasons, and the fresh produce that comes with them. At this time of year I look forward to spring lamb, beautiful Evesham asparagus and soft berries. Summer for me means plenty of sun and lots of golf. Even Chefs are happier in summer!”

All three restaurants have revealed the signature dishes that they will be preparing for visitors to this year’s Taste of Birmingham. From the Opus kitchen, guests can enjoy flaked free-range ham hock with potato salad, braised heel of Scottish beef and a Black Forest Martini.

Bass Festival 2008

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

If hip-hop, MCing and DJing are your thing then make sure you don’t miss this year’s BASS (British Art and Street Sounds) Festival, which starts on June 1st and runs throughout the month across over 40 venues in Birmingham, Leicester, Derby and Nottingham.

Billed as the biggest and longest annual celebration of British Art and Street Sounds, this year’s theme is The Elements of Hip Hop and will see artists from the UK, the US and South Africa come together to provide visitors with a host of events ranging from masterclasses and workshops to exhibitions and installations as well as theatre and dance performances.

The month long festival culminates in a two-day conference, at Birmingham’s Custard Factory and Manchester’s Contact Theatre, entitled MCs for Life with debates, workshops and films celebrating the art of MC Culture and featuring artists such as Black Thought, Ursula Rucker, Lord Finesse along with a further 40 artists from across the world.

The full line-up is available on www.bassfestival.co.uk

The Live Box

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

The Live Box is a regular performance arts event, run by Nu Century Arts, embracing live music, poetry, hip hop and dance, offering both emerging and established artists the opportunity to develop and perform their work. For seven years, The Live Box has successfully broken down barriers between high art and street culture, providing a relaxed and informal atmosphere for people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. The event itself has retained its own signature style of delivery: every Sunday evening, starting with a performance of rehearsed material from the main artist, The Live Box offers audience members the chance to participate in the jam session. Whilst jazz underpins the majority of The Live Box sessions, a unique feature is that impromptu poetry recitals sit comfortably alongside straight-ahead jazz, and hip hop MCs feel as at home as reggae musicians. The meeting of alternative genres has encouraged many exceptional performances, and defied stereotypes.

Nu Century Arts, and its directors Don and Soweto Kinch, are dedicated to the development and promotion of performing arts in the African-Caribbean community. Based in Birmingham, the organisation embraces an interdisciplinary approach to arts and education and, since its formation in 2000, has established an international reputation for producing groundbreaking, influential work. In addition to The Live Box, the company’s pioneering work encompasses theatre (in the shape of a professional theatre group), literature (Wired Up magazine), and education (jazz workshops, youth theatre and group trips abroad). Nu Century Arts has a commitment to alternative forms of black expression, and its continual advocacy of these forms, coupled with its pursuit of excellence, makes it a valuable resource for all communities.

Sunday 23 March: Pentalk plus Battle in the Box
Pentalk, a stalwart of the Birmingham hip hop scene for over ten years, performs its first ever set at The Live Box and with a full live band; Pentalk also hosts Battle in the Box. Formed in the mid-90s in the B19 area of Birmingham, the collective now spans several countries with members living as far afield as Canada and the US. Despite this, Pentalk has retained its core love of hard hitting beats and rhymes, and continues to astound audiences at appearances such as Newport’s B-Boy Championships and support slots with the likes of KRS One.

Sunday 30 March: The Live Box Crew: Tan, Francis, Nehemiah and Cherelle
Tonight is a showcase for four of Birmingham’s newest leading players. Brought together especially for this show, these young artists have each been regular participants at Live Box events in the past and are each making a name for themselves in different disciplines. 20 year old Francis Mott is an extraordinary vocalist with a timbre and maturity beyond his years. He has previously collaborated with Soweto Kinch, most recently in the staged work The Midnight Hop. 22 year Nehemiah Smith is one of the city’s best-known b-boys as part of the MDK crew, and is also an accomplished jazz drummer. 19 year old b-girl Cherelle Skeet is rapidly becoming an established solo artist, and for three years has run and promoted her own dance company, CRC. Nottingham-born 20 year old MC Tan has been carving a niche for herself performing at the Scratch Club, and supporting rapper David Banner.

Sunday 6 April: GTA
GTA has the exuberance of the O’Jays, the grandeur of Mozart, the swagger of Jay Dilla, the sound of Al Green, the sentiment of Elton John, and the golden tone of early Stevie
Neill Timms (aka Ineffable) and Chima Anya met at school in 2000, quickly created a vibe that excited anyone with a vague musical interest in the Oxford vicinity. Despite Chima moving to Birmingham for five years to complete a medical degree, and Neill staying on in Oxford to study business, the duo continued, and was invited to support legends such as KRS 1, Amp Fiddler, and Flavour Flav, also releasing its debut EP, Love is Here, on Blunted Records. Now a fully qualified practicing doctor and assistant accountant, Chima and Neill, respectively, have embarked upon their debut album, The Way, with the hope of adding some much needed charisma and sophistication to the UK’s urban scene. Drawing influences from the aforementioned hip-hop legends and their ilk, GTA has the substance of old school hip-hop spliced with the cutting edge swagger and charisma of what hip-hop is evolving into.

Sunday 13 April: Z-U led by Neil Charles

Z-U is a three-piece outfit pushing forward the boundaries of improvised music with a homogenous world sound, reflecting the eclectic range of its members’ influences. By taking the raw elements of jazz and allowing generous use of electronics, loops and effects, a symphony of sound is created in which fragments of melody are spontaneously imagined. The band has performed in many venues in London such as The Vortex, Spitz, Notting Hill Arts Club, and it also plays the festival circuit across Europe. The trio – Neil Charles on bass, Shabaka Hutchings on clarinet, and Tom Skinner on drums - recently supported Polar Bear at the London Jazz Festival and has an extensive tour scheduled for 2008.

Sunday 20 April: Tor plus Battle in the Box
Outta east London, this young lady is one of UK black music’s definite future stars. Recognize! - Ras Kwame, BBC 1Xtra
Tor is without doubt one of the strongest new MCs to emerge from the UK. After landing a weekly slot MCing on Mission FM alongside 1Xtra’s Twin B, she notched up a series of impressive collaborations on both sides of the Atlantic, including Kevin Mark Trail, Black Twang, Terri Walker, Gerald Levert, Twista, and Flying Lotus. Both as a female role model in a male dominated genre, and as a innovative performer, she has a genuine mass appeal yet always retains her credentials as a true MC.

Sunday 27 April: Ty and Soweto Kinch
The US hip-hop fraternity could learn from Ty’s third outing: there are 12 tracks, all of pop-song length, no skits, and it lasts under an hour. It is also low on braggadocio and high on ambition… his rhymes remain razor sharp, thought-provoking and often hilarious. [A] bling and fat-free approach to hip-hop - The Guardian
Rapper/producer and Mercury Music Prize nominee, TY has been instrumental in British hip hop since the early-90s. Born in London to Nigerian immigrants, he has evolved an uniquely British sound, consistently pushing back musical frontiers with challenging lyrical content. TY has appeared on tracks produced by IG Culture’s New Sector Movement, MC Mell ‘O’, DJ Shortee Blitz, and DJ Pogo. His third album, Closer, featured the likes of Eska Mtungwazi, De La Soul and Bahamadia. Ty and Soweto have staunch views about the distortions of ‘urban’ music and hip hop’s commercialisation; both also consistently push back the limitations of genres: don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch both artists together in what will be a thought provoking, original and, most of all, entertaining show.
